European Week for Waste Reduction

Events

On the occasion of the European Waste Reduction Week (SERD), the AMPN intervened with the four 7ème classes of the Saint Charles School, including the one in charge this year of the Marine Educative Area.

A workshop was presented to the students during which they had to play the role of animal caregivers who had rescued a dolphin, turtle or seagull caught in marine debris and requiring assistance.

The students had to remove the waste from the papier-mâché animals as carefully as possible. They then characterized this waste (plastic bags, fishing lines, vegetable nets, etc.) and determined the degradation time for each debris at sea.

Finally, they were guided in a reflection to find more ecological alternatives to waste found on animals. For example, replacing plastic bags (400 years of degradation) with fabric bags (6 months) or replacing single-use plastic straws with infinitely reusable metal straws. They were also able to notice that alternatives do not exist for all waste, such as for example fishing lines, and that the only solution remains in reducing their use.

We would like to congratulate the students who were very interested and motivated by this initiative and we thank the teachers and management of the Saint Charles School for their involvement.

In addition to these workshops, the species used for awareness raising and trapped in waste were then exhibited throughout the weekend in the gallery of the Fontvieille Shopping Center.
