Marine Educative Area "Generation 4": Food waste awareness

Marine Educative Area

The marine action of the 7ème A students at Fontvieille School this year is focused on sustainable consumption.

In collaboration with the Société Monégasque de Restauration and with the assistance of Mrs. Aurélie Mercier, the leftovers from the cafeteria meals were weighed this morning to raise awareness among the children about food waste.

The menu included:

  • A choice of starter (70 grams): grated carrots, beets, radishes
  • Roast pork (60 grams) with mashed potatoes (200 grams)
  • A portion of cheese (30 grams)
  • Apple compote (100 grams)
  • A slice of bread (20 grams)

This totaled 480 grams of food per tray.

Eight students did not take a starter, and 11 students did not take cheese. However, all took the compote. These elements were taken into account for the final calculation. For the 20 students present, the total weight of food consumed was expected to be 8710 grams. However, the total weight of organic waste amounted to 2240 grams. Thus, per student, on average, a quarter of the tray was thrown away, even though the menu was likely to appeal to all children.

Awareness-raising efforts throughout the year will gradually help them better understand the importance of sustainable consumption and the significance of diversifying their diet (bread is not an essential dish).

This action is also part of the European Week for Waste Reduction.
