Marine Educative Area "Generation 4": Sustainable fishing

Marine Educative Area

Today, the students of 7ème A at Fontvieille School studied the biodiversity of the seabed in their MEA using binocular magnifiers and/or the naked eye.

Dr. Heike Molenaar taught the children to identify different groups (mollusks, sponges, bryozoans, echinoderms, etc.). Identification charts provided to them allowed them to record the results in a summary table, mentioning the species or group name, size, etc.

Simultaneously, a workshop on sustainable fishing took place to enhance their understanding of regulations. Equipped with a fishing rod, ruler, scoring sheet, and a table indicating recommended sizes and periods for fishing in the AME, the children learned about responsible fishing practices. The message got across: the children released undersized fish or those in the reproductive period. A "police check" helped correct any mistakes made by our young anglers.

PS: All species were returned to their natural habitat after the workshop, and the fish were placed back in their box awaiting the next intervention.
