Marine Educative Area “Generation 5” : Mediterranean cetaceans

The awareness program for students in the 7^ème A class at Ecole Saint Charles continues.

Today, Mr. Stéphane Jamme (Aquanaute expertise), photographer and marine biologist, spoke to present the particularities of certain species: fin whale, sperm whale, Cuvier's beaked whale, Risso's dolphin, short-finned pilot whale, bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin.

Reproduction, duration and mechanism of breastfeeding, protection of juveniles by their mothers. Difference between odontocetes (cetaceans with teeth) and mysticetes (cetaceans with baleen plates). Role of baleen to filter water in order to eat shrimp. Movement speed. Reminder of threats. So many subjects presented in an anecdotal and fun way and enhanced with short videos.

The students also had the pleasure of simulating the size of the species in the corridor and becoming aware of the notable differences between each of them. The twenty meters of the fin whale greatly impressed them! The session ended with the presentation of the anatomy of the bottlenose dolphin using an exploded model which greatly aroused the curiosity of the students.

Another great time spent with the children who are becoming more and more aware of the need to preserve cetaceans!!!
