Marine Educative Area "Generation 6": Non-indigenous species

This morning, the students of 7^ème A class at École Saint-Charles, responsible for supervising the Marine Educative Area for the year 2023-2024, were informed about non-indigenous species.

Since the 19th century, the increase in maritime navigation, notably with the opening of the Suez Canal, has facilitated the introduction of species into the Mediterranean. These species, which are not native to the Mediterranean region, are referred to as non-indigenous.

The students were familiarized with these concepts and also learned that some species establish themselves peacefully while others cause serious disruptions. The latter are referred to as invasive species.

Following the presentation, the students had to identify, from different fish silhouettes and identification cards, which species are indigenous or non-indigenous.

Finally, they recorded the acquired knowledge on an exercise sheet to keep track of it.

The awareness of this new potential threat to the MEA constitutes a crucial step in their understanding of the ecosystems of the MEA and their commitment to their preservation.
