Marine Educative Area "Generation 6" : What is a fish ?

Thursday, November 9, MEA students were invited to the AMPN premises to participate in several workshops on the theme “what is a fish”.

They started by observing whole fish which were given to us by the U Luvassu fishery, whom we would particularly like to thank for their involvement in this action to educate new generations. During this workshop, they were able to observe the morphological particularities which define the “group” of fish (presence of fins, gills, scales, etc.). A fish was also dissected to show the internal anatomy of the animal.

Subsequently, the students attended a presentation intended to show them the great morphological diversity present in fish, ranging from the “simple” forms of sea breams to more particular forms such as the moray eel or the sunfish. The main differences between fish and marine mammals were also discussed.

Finally, the different techniques available to the MPA manager to assess fish populations were presented to the students with a particular focus on the new research program launched in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Community Jameel, and the AMPN. The BRUVS system (baited underwater cameras) from the company Blue Abacus was explained to the children who were able to discover the benefit of this new method of data collection.

After the lunch break, the students showed what they learned using an exercise sheet and presented the characteristics of certain fish species using diagrams.
