Bird monitoring

Marine Protected Areas

The AMPN has initiated monitoring of the avifauna frequenting the Larvotto marine protected area and particularly the Common Tern (protected species listed in Appendix II of the Bern Convention and Appendix II of the Bonn Convention). The multiple observations made since April show that several individuals use the buoys both as a perch during the day and as a resting place to spend the night. Although it is a summer visitor, these monitoring will continue after the summer season to determine if the species is wintering in the area. They will also make it possible to know if other remarkable species such as the penguin torda, the Arctic loon or the crested merganser frequent the marine protected area of Larvotto; the latter species having been observed in the neighboring town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in winter, its presence in Monaco cannot be ruled out.
