Monitoring Reserve Effect - 2022

Marine Protected Areas

Initiated in 2016 by Professor Patrice Francour, monitoring of the "reserve effect" in the Larvotto MPA continues by comparing the data with those collected on unprotected sites in the East (Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Menton), or to the West (Beaulieu-sur-mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat).

Thalassa Marine research & Environmental awareness carries out counts in 2 habitats, the Posidonia oceanica meadow and in a rocky environment.

Counts are carried out by visual censuses along 25 x 5 m transects and aim to identify fish species, assessing their abundance and size (total length) in order to determine biomass (weight) from the number of individuals (density).

The results obtained so far reveal the presence of a significant reserve effect in the Larvotto MPA for several years.
